After choosing Nigeria over England, former Three Lions forward waiting to hear from Eric Chelle
Published: April 15, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that there’s no going back on former Three Lions winger Dapo Afolayan’s decision to commit his international future to Nigeria over his country of birth, England.
Born in London, Afolayan has represented England's C team, comprising only non-league players, in the past.
On his debut, he came off the bench to replace onetime Nigeria Football Federation target Fejiri Okenabirhie in a friendly against Slovakia U23s.
Afolayan has been a key player for St. Pauli in this season's Bundesliga, featuring in every single game contested by the club, with the exception of the 2-0 loss to RB Leipzig, where he was an unused substitute.
In twenty-eight appearances in the German top-flight, he has registered three goals while producing two assists.
The former West Ham and Bolton Wanderers man believes he deserves a spot in the Super Eagles squad, but he has yet to be contacted by manager Eric Chelle ahead of the 2025 Unity Cup in London.
One of the great things about Amaju Pinnick's tenure as Nigeria Football Federation boss is that he was very good at convincing dual-national players to choose the Super Eagles, with the likes of Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi and Ola Aina switching their allegiance from England to Nigeria.
Afolayan's appearance for England's C team did not cap-tie him to his country of birth, meaning he is eligible to play for the Super Eagles immediately without filing a change of association.
His versatility would be an asset to the Super Eagles as he's capable of playing on both flanks and through the middle as a striker.
