Boost for Nigeria before WCQ playoffs: Udinese chief confirms Okoye is back after betting ban
Published: October 17, 2025
Nigeria have been handed a boost ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers playoffs in Morocco, with Udinese group technical director Nani confirming that goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is back in the Bianconeri squad, following the completion of his two-month suspension for betting-related offences.
Speaking to Messaggero Veneto, Nani expressed satisfaction at the 26-year-old's return to the team after his enforced absence.
"We welcome Maduka back," Nani said, as quoted by Tuttoudinese.
Okoye joined Udinese in the summer of 2023 and quickly established himself as one of the team’s first-choice goalkeepers before his suspension.
The Nigeria international, who previously featured for Watford in England, made a strong impression in Italy with his commanding performances and leadership from the back.
While confirming Okoye's reinstatement, Nani stressed that team selection decisions ultimately lie with the head coach.
"The choices are up to the coach, who has maximum freedom," he added, suggesting that Okoye’s return does not automatically guarantee an immediate start.
Udinese are set to face Cremonese in their next Serie A fixture on Monday, October 20, and Okoye is expected to be available for selection.
Okoye will now be aiming to regain his form and reestablish himself as a key figure for the Bianconeri.
A series of strong performances could also bolster his chances of earning a recall to the Nigerian national team ahead of the Super Eagles' World Cup qualifiers playoffs next month.
