'Doing fine' - Celtic interim manager confirms Iheanacho will be assessed before Rangers clash

Celtic interim manager Martin O'Neill has provided a positive update on Kelechi Iheanacho's fitness ahead of Sunday's highly anticipated Old Firm derby against Rangers.

The Nigerian forward sustained a hamstring injury during Celtic's 2-1 UEFA Europa League victory over SK Sturm Graz and has since missed two matches against Hearts and Falkirk.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, O'Neill revealed that Iheanacho is making good progress and could return in time for the Premier Sports Cup semi-final at Hampden.

"Doing fine. We will have a look tomorrow and see how things are," O'Neill told reporters.

Iheanacho, who joined the Scottish champions on a free transfer, has been in impressive form with three goals and one assist in eight appearances across all competitions.

The 29-year-old will be eager to prove his fitness and continue his strong run of form as he eyes a recall to the Super Eagles squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs in November.

Meanwhile, Iheanacho's return to form and fitness will also come as good news for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, whose options in attack will be strengthened as Nigeria aims to secure qualification for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
