Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has revealed that he was faced with traveling difficulties before linking up with the Nigeria squad in Benin City ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match with Sierra Leone.
The former Leicester City striker rued the absence of fans for the matchday three fixture holding in Edo State, where his deceased mother originally hailed from.
During the pandemic, Musa kept in touch with his international teammates through the Super Eagles WhatsApp group chat.
"We are supposed to be in camp today but we didn't get a flight, the flight is fully booked, and then we have a schedule for a flight tomorrow so everybody is expected to be in Benin tomorrow," Musa told the Super Eagles Media Team.
"For me and the team it is a very sad moment because playing in Benin in the hometown of my mom, I'd love to see my family members watch but there is nothing we can do because of the situation in the country with the pandemic so we have to play like that."
Musa was a surprise visitor at the Flying Eagles training camp in Abuja and offered words of advice to the players who are preparing for the regional qualifiers of the U20 AFCON.
"I was once like that, I'm just giving them words of encouragement that they can do it.
"In a couple of years maybe one or two players will be in the Super Eagles so they should just believe in themselves that they can do it, that's the only secret," he said.
The free agent concluded by saying that the Super Eagles are targeting victories in the double header against Sierra Leone and has a message for the fans.
"We are going to do our best to win the game, we know if we win those two games we have already qualified to the AFCON so we are doing all our best to qualify.
"And to the fans we know what they need is just winning and Inshallah we are going to do that."
