Maduka Okoye has finally made his top-flight debut in an Eredivisie clash between Sparta Rotterdam and SC Heerenveen at the Sparta-Stadion Het Kasteel on Sunday afternoon, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The Super Eagles goalkeeper was preferred in the starting lineup over Benjamin van Leer, a reward for his impressive performance against ADO Den Haag in the KNVB Cup last Wednesday.
Okoye will come under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons for conceding four goals on his debut against SC Heerenveen.
Sparta Rotterdam's defence was far from being secure especially in the first half as Benjamin Nygren, Jan Paul van Hecke and Henk Veerman found the net to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
In the 57th minute, Veerman broke the offside trap and calmly slotted into the far corner to make it 4-0 but Lennart Thy netted a consolation for the home team from the spot in stoppage time.
Okoye is battling the more experienced duo Daniel Akpeyi and Sebastian Osigwe for a spot in the starting lineup in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Sierra Leone.
Should he feature in any of the matches, the German-born goalkeeper will become cap-tied to the Super Eagles.
