English Championship side Coventry City have reached an agreement in principle with Premier League club Brentford for the signing of Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Allnigeriasoccer.com exclusively reported six days ago that Coventry City, managed by Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, were the nailed-on favourites to sign the FC Ebedei product.
The proposed move is a loan deal that includes an option for Coventry to make the transfer permanent in the summer, subject to a medical and the completion of final paperwork.
The 28-year-old has found first-team opportunities limited at Brentford this season.
Onyeka has made six Premier League appearances, all from the bench, and has yet to register a start. This follows his return from a loan spell with Bundesliga side FC Augsburg, where he spent last season.
Coventry City, currently leading the EFL Championship, have moved to strengthen their squad as the season progresses.
The club has identified Onyeka as a key midfield reinforcement, with negotiations reported to be progressing positively in recent days.
Despite interest from other clubs, Coventry have emerged as the leading destination in discussions.
Onyeka is known for his defensive qualities and midfield work rate, attributes that have seen him feature regularly for the Nigerian national team.
He has earned 41 international caps for the Super Eagles and was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations that won the bronze medal in Morocco.
The midfielder joined Brentford from Danish club FC Midtjylland in 2021 and has since gained Premier League experience, along with valuable exposure in German football during a loan spell. His potential move now presents an opportunity for regular football at club level.
Both clubs are expected to confirm the deal once medical assessments and documentation are finalised. An official announcement is anticipated in due course, pending completion of the remaining formalities.
