Super Eagles’ new star Chibuike Nwaiwu is rapidly making a name for himself in the Turkish Super Lig despite only joining Trabzonspor during the January transfer window.
Nwaiwu was one of four players to make their senior debuts for Nigeria last month, alongside Emmanuel Fernandez, Yira Sor and Philip Otele.
Primarily known for his defensive responsibilities, he has set himself apart from other central defenders in the Super Lig with an impressive goal return.
The 22-year-old has emerged as Trabzonspor’s unexpected attacking weapon, registering three goals in 11 league appearances.
Alongside Rizespor’s Samet Akaydin, the newly capped Nigeria international is the joint top-scoring centre-back in Türkiye's top flight.
Nwaiwu has outscored several high-profile defenders, including Beşiktaş Emmanuel Agbadou, Galatasaray’s Davinson Sánchez and Wilfried Singo.
He has particularly showcased his aerial strength, with all three of his goals coming via headers—netting a brace against Fatih Karagümrük before sealing a 2–1 victory over Galatasaray with a decisive strike.
In addition, Nwaiwu has contributed creatively, providing an assist against Fenerbahçe in the 22nd round of fixtures.
