'That is enough' - Lookman accepts bronze but admits Super Eagles wanted to be kings of Africa

Ademola Lookman has revealed that the Super Eagles approached the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with the clear ambition of lifting the trophy.

Nigeria settled for a podium finish after edging past Egypt 4-2 on penalties on Saturday evening, with the Atalanta forward keeping his composure to convert the decisive spot kick.

Before the semifinals, the three-time African champions were the only team with a perfect record, having won five consecutive games.

However, their perfect run came to a painful end as they suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to hosts Morocco, narrowly missing out on a place in the showpiece final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

One of the favourites to win the title following a strong group stage performance, Nigeria viewed the bronze medal match as an opportunity to secure a podium finish.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS post-match, Lookman stated: "Everyone wanted to win the gold medal, we came for the trophy but it didn't happen. We leave that tournament with the bronze medal, and that is enough."

Lookman registered three goals and four assists at Afcon 2025, more than any other player at the tournament in Morocco, and he's in contention to be named in the official team of the tournament.

This is the ninth time that the Super Eagles have finished third in the Africa Cup of Nations, after 1976, 1978, 1992, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2019.
