Uganda 1-3 Nigeria: Five observations from Super Eagles' convincing win over Cranes

Nigeria claimed a convincing 3–1 win over Uganda on Tuesday evening to advance to the knockout stage as Group C winners.

Paul Onuachu put the Super Eagles ahead, while Raphael Onyedika's second-half brace sealed the victory.

Uganda pulled one back late on through Rogers Mato, scoring with fifteen minutes remaining, but it proved to be only a consolation.

Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the win.

Chelle makes eight changes

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle made eight changes to the lineup that beat Tunisia in Saturday night's second group match against Uganda.

The Malian tactician opted for Francis Uzoho in goal, with Igor Ogbu featuring in defense alongside Blackburn Rovers fullback Ryan Alebiosu, who made his Super Eagles debut.

In midfield, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru partnered Raphael Onyedika, with Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze operating on the wings. Up front, Paul Onuachu was preferred to Sevilla striker Akor Adams.

Denis Onyango sustains injury

Uganda captain Denis Masinde Onyango suffered a suspected ankle injury and was substituted at the start of the second half.

The experienced goalkeeper appeared in discomfort for much of the first half, repeatedly requiring medical attention after making a save.

Unable to continue, Onyango was withdrawn at the break, with backup goalkeeper Omar Salim Magoola coming on in his place.

His absence proved costly for the Cranes, as Salim later committed an error that resulted in his dismissal before the hour mark.

Rushing out of his penalty area to stop Victor Osimhen from scoring, Salim handled the ball outside the box, prompting the referee to show him a red card and leaving Uganda reduced to ten men.

Uche Ikpeazu silenced by Eagles defense

St. Johnstone striker Uche Ikpeazu was kept quiet by the Super Eagles' defense throughout the match.

The Ugandan forward, whose father is Nigerian, had earlier expressed his desire to score for the Cranes ahead of the encounter.

However, he was effectively neutralized by the Eagles' backline and failed to make an impact, as Uganda crashed out of the tournament without finding the back of the net.

Osimhen fails to closes down on Rashidi Yekini's record

Victor Osimhen missed the chance to close the gap on Rashidi Yekini's long-standing record as Nigeria's all-time leading goalscorer after failing to score against Uganda.

The Galatasaray forward, who was one of only three players to retain his place in the squad, started the dead-rubber match but could not add to his international tally as Nigeria cruised to a comfortable victory.

Osimhen currently has 32 goals for the Super Eagles, following his strike against Tunisia, leaving him five goals shy of Yekini's record of 37 goals.

The 27-year-old will now have to wait for another opportunity to further narrow the gap to the legendary striker.

Nigeria defensive woes continues

Nigeria once again failed to keep a clean sheet, despite securing a dominant victory over the Cranes in Morocco.

The Super Eagles have now gone six matches without a shutout, with their last clean sheet coming in the 4–0 win against Benin in October.

They have also conceded four second-half goals at the AFCON tournament, a statistic head coach Chelle will be eager to address as the Eagles push for a fourth AFCON title.
