'We have two' - Former Nigeria coach labels Lookman, Osimhen top players after UCL heroics

Former Nigeria coach and captain Sunday Oliseh has praised the performances of two Super Eagles forwards, highlighting their impact in Europe’s elite club competition following their recent Champions League heroics.

Speaking on his Global Football Insights Podcast, Oliseh stated that Nigerian football currently benefits from having high-performing players competing at the highest level of European football.

He specifically mentioned striker Victor Osimhen and forward Ademola Lookman, stressing their importance to the national team’s future success.

“We have two top Nigerian players now doing well in the Champions League. We have Osimhen doing well in the Champions League and we have Lookman doing exceptionally well too,” Oliseh said on the podcast.

He further emphasized leadership responsibility within the Super Eagles setup, adding, “So these two top players are doing well. All we need now is for these two top players to lead the team and for the others to follow and you will have it.”

Oliseh also stressed the financial and global visibility benefits that come with strong Champions League performances by Nigerian players.

He explained that success at that level attracts global attention and investment into Nigerian football.

“For the Super Eagles to get better, our players need to be doing well in the Champions League. That is the highest level.

“Then you get more publicity, more money coming in, more transfers, and people become more interested in your country. That is the holy grail of club football,” he added.

Osimhen has been in strong form this season in the Champions League while representing Galatasaray, where he has scored 7 goals in the competition.

Meanwhile, Lookman has continued to impress since joining Atlético Madrid during the winter transfer window.

The former Everton player has scored goals across multiple competitions, including the Champions League, Copa del Rey, and La Liga, further strengthening his growing reputation in Spanish football.
