Southampton are on the brink of announcing the signing of Chelsea-reared German-born Nigerian defender Derrick Abu.
The Saints have pulled off a transfer coup by luring the right-back to the St Mary's Stadium, beating Premier League clubs Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove to his signature.
The former England U17 international is joining Southampton on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Chelsea, whom he joined at U11 level after he was scouted while playing at a tournament in Spain for grassroots club Coezer FC.
Abu has undergone a medical at Southampton, paving the way for him to complete his move to the Championship club.
According to The Athletic UK (subscription required), Abu has signed a two-year deal at Southampton and becomes the first signing for new Southampton manager Russell Martin, who took over on a three-year deal in June after leaving Swansea City.
It is claimed that Southampton will announce the signing of Abu as from Monday, July 3.
Abu will link up with Nigerian trio Kazeem Olaigbe, Princewill Ehibhatiomhan and Alex Stepien-Iwumene. at the Southampton academy.
