Mozambique secured a historic qualification to the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite a 2-1 defeat to Cameroon in their final Group F match.
Ahead of their knockout match against Nigeria, Mozambique President Daniel Francisco Chapo has offered the Mambas a significant monetary incentive.
He promised an extraordinary bonus of 500,000 meticais (approximately ₦11.3 million in Nigerian currency) to each player and member of the coaching staff if they beat the Super Eagles and reach the quarterfinals.
When asked whether the announcement creates pressure or motivation ahead of Monday's game, Mambas manager Chiquinho Conde explained at the pre-match press conference: "Our president is someone who loves football, and we are grateful for his support. He is happy to motivate us, and he knows that we are capable of winning this game.
"That is why he made this promise – to encourage us to play hard, with an open heart, and to recognise the significance of this mission."
Conde emphasized the pride of representing Mozambique, stating: "We are here for our country. Our only job is to continue representing it with dedication. Our country has faced many challenges, and right now, we have the support of our people.
"This is not pressure; pressure is for those in hospitals. Our goal is to give everything we can, to enjoy the game, and to make our nation proud."
Conde acknowledged the strength of the Super Eagles, noting that the three-time African champions have players on the books of top European clubs.
"It’s Nigeria. They are very competitive, with a squad of 28 players, most of whom play in top leagues abroad. For us, we are still growing. Only four or five of our players play at the highest level, while the rest compete locally.
"What gives us strength is our unity as a group and the belief that we can compete with big teams. Tomorrow, we want to be the best team we can be."
Nigeria and Mozambique have met five times in all competitions, with the Super Eagles remaining unbeaten after recording four wins and one draw.
