Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu set a new Süper Lig record on Sunday following his standout display in Trabzonspor’s 2-1 victory over Göztepe.

Onuachu, who led the line as centre forward, was forced to finish the match in defence after Wagner Pina received a red card in the 78th minute.

Despite operating in an unfamiliar role, the Nigerian international produced a composed and disciplined performance, helping the visitors hold firm and secure all three points at the Gürsel Aksel Stadium.

Onuachu capped his performance with outstanding numbers, registering eleven clearances and winning ten aerial duels.

According to OptaCan, the Nigerian international has now become the first player this season to record 10+ aerial duels won and 10+ clearances in a single Super Lig match.

The 31-year-old has rediscovered his top form in Turkey after a difficult spell in the Premier League with Southampton. 

Since joining the Claret-Blues in the summer, he has scored eleven goals and provided one assist in 16 appearances across all competitions.

His impressive displays have earned him a recall to the Super Eagles, as he was named in the 54-man provisional squad ahead of preparations for the AFCON tournament.

Onuachu will be eager to maintain his strong form and secure a place in Nigeria’s final squad for the biennial competition.
