A curious incident unfolded just before the penalty shoot-out in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final between Nigeria and Morocco.
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali placed his white towel beside the goal post as preparations for the shoot-out were underway.
A few moments later, a steward who noticed the item moved quickly to remove it from the area near the goal.
The action came just as a Morocco fan in the stand pointed out the towel, drawing attention to the scene.
Some spectators, particularly Moroccan fans, applauded the steward’s prompt response.
The moment occurred immediately before Nigeria and Morocco faced off in the penalty shoot-out that would decide which team advanced to the final.
In a video shared on X by @Cleverlydey4u, Nwabali placed a towel beside the goalpost before the shootout began, drawing the attention of both stadium staff and fans.
In the shoot-out, Stanley Nwabali saved two penalties. Morocco won the penalty shoot-out 4-2, advancing to the final of AFCON 2025.
The Eric Chelle–led Super Eagles will face Egypt in the third-place game on Saturday, where they will aim to conclude the tournament on a high note.
