Award-winning former Porto striker named in Iran's 35-man squad for Nigeria, Costa Rica friendlies

Iran national team coach Amir Ghalenoei has announced his roster that will participate in a training camp in Antalya, Turkey as part of the national team's preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

During the training camp, Iran will play two friendly matches, first against Nigeria's Super Eagles on March 27, followed by a clash with Costa Rica's La Tricolor four days later.

An analysis of Iran's 35-man squad revealed that four goalkeepers, twelve defenders, six midfielders and thirteen forwards.

The Iranian Football Federation confirmed that Dennis Eckert, who was called up for the March camp, will officially be cleared to represent the Iranian national team once he obtains the necessary approvals from Fifa.

Arguably the standout name in Iran's squad is the widely admired Olympiakos striker Mehdi Taremi, who previously played for Portuguese setup FC Porto and Serie A giants Inter Milan.

The experienced forward recorded three goal involvements at the 2022 Fifa World Cup, scoring a brace against England before providing an assist against Wales.

During his time in Portugal, the two-time Iranian Footballer of the Year won the Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, Taça da Liga and Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, and finished as the Primeira Liga's top scorer in the 2019–20 and 2022–23 seasons.
