Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu admitted that superior efficiency in decisive moments made the difference after his side's 3–0 defeat to Bayern Munich, the leaders of the Bundesliga.
Speaking to the official club website following the match, Agu explained that Werder Bremen approached the game with a clear tactical plan and felt parts of it were successfully executed against the reigning heavyweights.
Reflecting on the overall performance, the defender stated that the team were able to compete with Bayern for large spells but struggled to match their opponents’ ruthlessness in front of goal.
Agu said, “We had a good game plan that worked in some situations. However, Bayern were more clinical in the final third.”
His remarks underlined the contrast between Bayern’s ability to convert chances and Bremen’s failure to capitalise on promising moments during the contest.
Despite the scoreline, the Nigerian defender insisted there were encouraging aspects for Werder Bremen to take from the performance.
He stressed that the match was not one-sided in terms of general play and believed the difference ultimately came down to execution in key areas.
“Overall, we can take a lot of positives away from this – I think we played on equal terms, but Bayern had the better of the final actions,” Agu added.
On a personal level, Agu also reflected on the significance of featuring in front of the home supporters.
He described the experience as a special moment, regardless of the disappointing result for the team.
“For me personally, it was wonderful to be able to play here in the stadium in front of the fans again,” he said, highlighting the emotional importance of the occasion.
Werder Bremen will now look to build on the positives identified by Agu as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.
