Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has given a positive update on Kelechi Iheanacho’s injury, suggesting the Super Eagles forward could be included in the squad for the crucial top-of-the-table clash against Hearts.
Iheanacho, who joined the Hoops as a free agent last September, has been sidelined since featuring in the League Cup final against St Mirren on December 14.
The injury also ruled the former Leicester City striker out of Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Super Eagles forward returned to training on Thursday, with O’Neill revealing that the Nigerian international is now in contention to make the matchday squad this weekend.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the Celtic boss expressed his delight at seeing Iheanacho back on the training pitch.
"He trained today. I think that might be his second day. He didn't travel with us. He has been doing some training and he did fine today. I am glad to see him back," O’Neill said.
However, O’Neill cautioned that a starting role may come too soon for the 29-year-old, though his availability would still be a welcome addition.
"That helps us if that's the case. It might be a bit of a stretch to start him in the game at the moment but at least he is going to be available," he added.
Before picking up the injury, Iheanacho made a notable impact at Celtic, scoring three goals and providing one assist in ten appearances across all competitions.
The Nigerian forward will be hoping to get minutes against Hearts as he continues his recovery and looks to play a key role in helping Celtic secure a positive result on Sunday.
