Speaking before Club Brugge's Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Wednesday night, Franky Van der Elst has reminded the Belgian top-flight club that the La Liga powerhouse strengthened their squad during the January transfer window with the signing of former African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman.
One of the most iconic figures to represent Club Brugge, Franky Van der Elst made 619 appearances for the West Flanders outfit, scoring 21 goals before bringing his distinguished playing career to an end.
Although he is yet to open his goalscoring account in La Liga, Atletico Madrid’s marquee signing of the winter transfer window, Lookman, has already endeared himself to the club’s supporters with two outstanding displays in the Copa del Rey.
After marking his debut against Real Betis with a goal and an assist, he replicated the feat as Los Rojiblancos swept aside FC Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals.
Lookman will be looking to maintain his impressive run in cup competitions for Atletico Madrid tonight and he will be facing a familiar figure in Raphael Onyedika, who is a key player in midfield for Club Brugge.
Van der Elst has warned Club Brugge of the threat posed by Lookman, who has made an immediate impact at Atlético Madrid.
"Don't forget that Ademola Lookman has joined. He performed very well immediately," Franky Van der Elst noted in Het Nieuwsblad, via Voetbalkrant.
"Against Barcelona, Atlético played with Lookman, Alvarez, and Griezmann in attack, and Llorente in midfield."
Lookman knows Club Brugge well as he was part of the Atalanta side that beat them on matchday 2 of the league phase, after being eliminated by the Belgian outfit at this stage last year.
