Hull City manager explains why Super Eagles centre-back Ajayi started against Millwall

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović has explained the reason behind his decision to start Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi in the Tigers’ 2-0 victory over Millwall in the second-leg of the Championship playoff semi-final on Monday night.

Ajayi, who joined the Tigers on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion, was one of two changes made by Jakirović following the goalless draw in the first-leg at the MKM Stadium.

The former Arsenal defender justified the manager’s faith with a composed display at the heart of the defence, helping Hull City keep a clean sheet and book their place in the playoff final at Wembley Stadium.

Speaking after the game, Jakirović revealed that the tactical adjustment was made to better cope with Millwall’s attacking threat, particularly from wide areas and set-pieces.

“We changed our formation because when I watched the first leg," Jakirovic said via South London.

"I saw maybe we would have problems because they were coming very high with the full-backs."

The manager explained that Ajayi was named in the starting lineup to strengthen the defence and help contain Millwall’s aerial threat.

“They tried to fill the pockets with two wingers. [Josh] Coburn is there and also we decided to put one centre-back extra [so] then we can also control better set-pieces with Semi Ajayi, and also try to press with two wingers and provide support with [Matt] Crooks and [Regan] Slater," he added.

Ajayi carried out his defensive responsibilities effectively, recording six clearances and two recoveries during the encounter.

Ajayi will now look to maintain his impressive form as Hull City continue their bid to secure promotion back to the Premier League.
