Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle still waiting for Chukwueze, 6 others before Egypt clash

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is still expecting the arrival of seven players, including AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze and Blackburn Rovers full-back Ryan Alebiosu, as Nigeria intensifies preparations for Tuesday’s international friendly against Egypt in Cairo.

The Super Eagles began their build-up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco on Sunday, with the early arrival of team officials and several invited players.

However, training sessions commenced on Monday as Chelle and his technical crew began to shape plans for the continental tournament.

The number of players in camp increased to 21 by Monday evening, as several invited players arrived in batches following their club commitments over the weekend.

Those already in camp include Francis Uzoho, Stanley Nwabali, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Akinsanmiro Ebenezer, Amas Obasogie, Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Igho Ogbu, Tochukwu Nnadi, Zaidu Sanusi, Paul Onuachu, Frank Onyeka, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Bruno Onyemaechi, Cyril Dessers, Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke and Raphael Onyedika.

However, the Malian tactician is still awaiting the arrival of Chukwueze, Alebiosu, Victor Osimhen, Chidozie Awaziem, Moses Simon, Usman Muhammed and Salim Fago Lawal to complete the squad ahead of the encounter with the Pharaohs.

The friendly against Egypt forms part of Nigeria’s preparations for the 2025 AFCON, scheduled to be held in Morocco.

The Super Eagles will open their Group C campaign against Tanzania on December 23, before facing Tunisia on December 27 and Uganda in their final group match on December 30.

Chelle will be hoping to use the tournament to guide Nigeria to a fourth AFCON title, as the team looks to make amends for the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The clash with Egypt is expected to provide Chelle an early opportunity to assess squad depth, team chemistry and tactical options as preparations for the continental showpiece gather momentum.
