Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has expressed disappointment following Coventry City’s narrow 2–1 defeat to Southampton at the CBS Arena on Saturday, admitting the Sky Blues failed to convert several scoring chances despite a strong overall performance.
The Nigeria International, who joined Coventry during the winter transfer window, played 77 minutes before being replaced by Victor Torp, who later scored the hosts’ only goal from the penalty spot in stoppage time.
Speaking after the match, Onyeka said both teams produced an entertaining contest but lamented Coventry’s inability to capitalise on their opportunities.
"It was a good game on both sides but unfortunately we could not get the win," saidOnyeka to the BBC.
"We had lots of chances which obviously did not go in. It is one of those days where things might not go well for us."
The midfielder said no player wants to lose but emphasised the importance of learning from the result and moving forward.
"But we need to pick ourselves up and move to the next game. Every player does not want a defeat but today is one of those days, we need to accept, and pick ourselves up and move forward to the next game."
He noted that while the late penalty offered hope, the team still missed further chances to draw level before the final whistle.
"When we scored the penalty, we were like this is the time, at the same time, after the penalty, we still had chances to equalize. It is just disappointing. We don't need to dwell on this for so long," he added.
Despite the setback, Onyeka urged his teammates to quickly shift their focus to the next fixture, stressing that defeats are part of football.
"We don't need to dwell on it for too long. We look forward to Swansea and we take the result today and look forward to Swansea," he said.
He also reiterated his happiness at the club, praising the warm reception from supporters and teammates since his arrival.
"My first day at the club I knew it was right. The feelings around, not just the fans and the players the way they welcome me. I am really pleased to be here."
Onyeka has proven to be an excellent addition to the Sky Blues, standing out with his tireless work rate and strong ability to regain possession for his team.
