Ex-Golden Eaglets striker Abubakar making inroads at Famalicao, scores against Mourinho's Benfica

Former Nigeria U17 international Umar Abubakar is making progress at Portuguese Primeira Liga club Famalicão.

Abubakar has earned call-ups for all the matches played by the club in the Primeira Liga since the start of 2026, with the exception of the trip to Sporting CP on February 15.

A product of Footwork FC, the young centre-forward joined Famalicão last summer, signing a five-year deal until the end of the 2029-2030 season.

He is being gradually integrated into Portuguese football, having made three starts since his arrival from KAA Gent.

At KAA Gent, Abubakar played a key role in the youth team's triumph in the 1ste Nationale VV, scoring 21 goals in 27 appearances during the 2024–2025 season.

Famalicão continued their push for the top four in the Portuguese top-flight with a 2-2 draw against a Benfica team coached by the iconic tactician Jose Mourinho.

They had to come from behind to secure a share of the spoils on Saturday, with second half goals from Mathias de Amorim and Abubakar cancelling out first-half strikes from Andreas Schjelderup and Richard Ríos.

From a short corner taken by Sorriso, Mathias de Amorim delivered a cross into the six-yard box, and Abubakar got the decisive touch, diverting it into the back of the net in the 78th minute.

Abubakar netted his first senior goal in Famalicão's 2-1 home win over Avs FS in February.
