Explained: Why Osimhen was booked just six minutes into Besiktas v Galatasaray

In a fiery Istanbul derby at Beşiktaş’ home ground, Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen was shown a yellow card just six minutes into the match after a controversial early incident.

The booking came after Osimhen surged into the penalty area following a quick attacking move, dribbling past defender Emmanuel Agbadou before colliding with goalkeeper Ersin Destanoğlu.

Referee Ozan Ergun ruled that Osimhen had made excessive contact with the goalkeeper during the challenge, stopping play as Destanoğlu remained on the ground receiving medical attention.

Although Osimhen appeared to protest that he was attempting to reach the ball, the official immediately brandished a yellow card, setting a tense tone for the remainder of the match.

The atmosphere became even more heated as the derby progressed.

According to Milliyet,  foreign objects were thrown from the Beşiktaş fan section toward Osimhen after the incident.

The striker responded by gesturing toward the crowd with outstretched arms, seemingly expressing frustration over the hostility directed at him.

Later in the match, Osimhen continued to be involved in Galatasaray’s attacking play, though he was forced to operate cautiously to avoid receiving a second booking.

Meanwhile, Galatasaray maintained control of possession for long periods and ultimately secured a 1-0 victory, thanks to Victor Osimhen’s goal, which took his tally to 11 goals this season in the league.
