Werder Bremen received a boost ahead of their Bundesliga clash with Mainz as Felix Agu returned to training following an adductor muscle injury, according to a report by Deichstube.
The 26-year-old had been sidelined since February after suffering the injury during the pre-match warm-up before Werder’s 2-1 defeat to FC St. Pauli.
Agu was originally named in the starting lineup for the match against St. Pauli but was forced to withdraw before kickoff due to the injury.
Since then, the defender has been undergoing a careful rehabilitation program to regain full fitness.
His return to team training on Thursday marks a significant step in his recovery, giving head coach Daniel Thioune additional options in defence as Bremen prepare for Sunday’s home game.
Despite Agu’s positive return, two other Nigerian players remain unavailable.
Victor Boniface and young talent Wesley Ade continue to be sidelined due to long-term injuries.
Boniface is recovering from knee surgery, while Adeh remains out with a torn ligament.
Agu’s reintegration comes at a crucial time for Werder Bremen, who have struggled with a series of absences throughout the season.
The club is managing player workloads carefully to avoid setbacks, with Thioune monitoring each player’s readiness ahead of the Mainz match.
