For the first time in his Chelsea career, Nigerian right-back Derrick
Abu has been included in a matchday squad for an U18 Premier League
fixture, with manager Ed Brand naming him on the bench in the ongoing
game against Southampton at the Cobham Training Center, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The
first year scholar was not selected for the opening day draw vs
Brighton & Hove on September 12 and was also omitted from the team
that thrashed West Ham United last weekend.
Against the
Saints, Abu starts on the bench alongside another player of Nigerian
descent, goalkeeper Kelechi Chibueze while Prince Adegoke misses out
through injury.
The 2003-born defender was a key member of the Chelsea squad that beat Manchester City
to win last season's Premier League U16 International Cup and ten days
after the triumph, he was on the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers
in the U18 Premier League Cup, his first squad involvement at that
level.
Abu has described himself as an attacking fullback that loves to get forward and get crosses in.
He has played nonstop at Chelsea since the age of ten, with the Blues beating Norwich City to his signature.
