Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović has provided an encouraging update on the fitness of Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi ahead of their upcoming Championship fixture against Portsmouth.
Ajayi, who impressed with Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has been sidelined since returning from the tournament.
The centre-back has missed several Championship matches, including fixtures against Preston North End, Swansea City, Blackburn Rovers, Watford, Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers and Derby County.
Speaking to Hull Live, Jakirović revealed that the defender has made significant progress in training but stopped short of confirming his immediate availability.
He noted that the Nigerian could either be included for the trip to Portsmouth or be considered for selection in Tuesday's game against Ipswich Town.
"He (Ajayi) trained with us normally today, which is great news," he said. "We will see if he's with us in Portsmouth or will be in the squad at Ipswich on Tuesday."
Ajayi, who joined the Tigers last summer, has quickly become an important figure for the Championship club, scoring one goal in twelve league matches.
His experience, aerial dominance and leadership are expected to provide a significant lift for the Tigers as they aim to strengthen their push for promotion to the Premier League.
