Speaking on the Neo Spor YouTube channel after Galatasaray's 1-0 win over Besiktas in the Istanbul derby on Saturday, former Besiktas director of football Önder Özen reckons that Victor Osimhen is the best striker in Turkiye and nearby regions.
Osimhen was the hero of the derby, heading home the game-winning goal in the 39th minute.
The former African Footballer of the Year is in scintillating form, having scored or assisted in each of his last eight matches for the Turkish champions in the Süper Lig, matching his career-best goal contribution first achieved at Napoli in 2023.
Önder Özen noted that Osimhen's performance has been extremely impressive, highlighting the role he played in Galatasaray's hard-fought win over Besiktas.
"Let's start from Bavaria and come to our region; Osimhen is the greatest striker in this region. He contributed both in attack and defense. He also disrupted the connections Beşiktaş made from defense to midfield. He hindered Beşiktaş's fluidity," Özen was quoted as saying by habersarikirmizi.com.
Only Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé (13), Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon (8), and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane (8)—all representing clubs in Europe’s top five leagues—have scored more goals than the Nigerian international in this season’s UEFA Champions League.
