Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune has hinted at a potential positional change for Felix Agu, suggesting the versatile full-back could be deployed in a more advanced role as the Bundesliga side explores tactical adjustments ahead of their next game against RB Leipzig.
The 26-year-old has caught the eye during training, not only for his defensive contributions but also for his attacking output. Agu was actively involved in multiple scoring situations during the week, even finding the net with impressive finishes that highlighted a different side to his game.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Thioune revealing that the experimentation is part of a broader tactical plan rather than a response to squad limitations.
Providing insight into his thinking, Thioune explained that Agu’s adaptability is central to the team’s plans.
The Bremen boss stated, as quoted by Deichstube. “We’ve experimented a lot with Felix because I know how versatile he is and where he can bring quality to the team,” underlining his belief in the player’s ability to impact matches in multiple roles.
Agu’s standout attribute remains his pace. He has recorded one of the fastest sprint speeds in the squad this season, second only to Justin Njinmah.
Thioune emphasized the importance of that quality, noting, “That’s a skill that can help us in every phase of the game,” suggesting his speed could be utilized more aggressively in attacking transitions.
With Olivier Deman considered a key figure on the left flank, a direct replacement appears unlikely.
This has opened the door for Agu to potentially shift roles. One option could see him move to the right wing, while another would involve pushing further forward on the left, forming an attacking partnership with Deman across that side.
Thioune confirmed that such scenarios are under serious consideration, referencing a recent friendly match as evidence. “We’re considering exactly that,” he said. “For example, he played on the left wing in the friendly against our U23 team because I believe it can work.”
Despite keeping his final decision under wraps ahead of the upcoming fixture, Thioune made it clear that Agu remains central to his plans.
Stressing the player’s importance, he said, “If he’s fit and at 100 percent, then in my opinion he belongs on the pitch.”
He added, “Now we have to decide where we’ll put him. But we won’t know that until Saturday, because I’m keeping that to myself until then.”
As Werder Bremen prepare for their next challenge, Agu’s role could prove crucial in shaping the team’s attacking dynamics.
