Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has cast doubt over reports linking Emmanuel Fernandez with a summer move to Arsenal, questioning both the club's need for reinforcements at centre-back and the player's readiness for a step up.
Fernandez, who joined Rangers at the start of the campaign, has enjoyed a standout debut season in Scotland.
The 24-year-old has exceeded early expectations at Ibrox Stadium, establishing himself as a key figure in defence while also contributing going forward.
His consistent performances have not gone unnoticed, earning him a maiden call-up to the Nigeria national football team and a place in the Scottish PFA Team of the Year.
Additionally, the recognition has reportedly sparked interest from several European clubs, including Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, and Feyenoord.
However, Smith remained unconvinced that a move to north London is likely at this stage of Fernandez's career.
Speaking on the speculation, the former Arsenal forward questioned whether the Gunners have any real need to strengthen in central defence
"I don't see why they'd need a centre-half anyway," Smith told Scotman. "Looking at his previous clubs, Spalding United on loan, Peterborough."
While acknowledging the defender's impressive form in Scotland, Smith also raised concerns about whether Fernandez could replicate that level consistently in a more demanding environment.
"Yes, he's had a good season at Rangers, but who knows whether he can continue that kind of form at a higher level," he added.
Smith further highlighted Arsenal's existing defensive depth as a potential barrier to any deal.
"I'd be surprised if Arsenal went for him given that, [Jurrian] Timber can play in the middle; plus they've got [Cristhian] Mosquera, so they've got good cover in the middle," Smith concluded.
The Nigerian International has enjoyed a standout campaign for Rangers, making a significant impact at both ends of the pitch with six goals in 29 appearances across all competitions.
