'Onyedika wasn't bad' - Club Brugge coach insists midfielder's bench role not performance-related

Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika, is pushing for a move away from the Jupiler Pro League giants in search of a new challenge at the end of the season.

Onyedika joined the Flanders club from FC Midtjylland for a fee of 9.5 million euros  in August 2022, making him Club Brugge's fourth most expensive signing ever to date.

The Nigeria international has lost his place in the starting lineup amid speculation surrounding his future, with Club Brugge manager Ivan Leko opting for Hugo Vetlesen.

After making a swift return from the injury he sustained in a 2–1 defeat at Union Saint-Gilloise, he has played a total of 36 minutes across two matches, featuring for 19 minutes against KV Mechelen before a 17-minute cameo against KAA Gent.

Explaining Onyedika's limited game time in recent matches, Leko insisted that it was not due to the midfielder's form.

In quotes relayed by Voetbal Primeur, he said: "Not because Rapha was bad: even at Union, where he got injured, he played his game.

"He (Hugo Vetlesen) was simply excellent and crowned himself the match winner. In that case, you naturally stay in the team. That is just logical."

Onyedika will enter the final year of his contract with Club Brugge at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old has been linked with clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga and Turkey, with Galatasaray, Wolfsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt and Aston Villa all reportedly interested in his services.
