Alex Iwobi was delighted to make his first start at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations for the Super Eagles in their 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday night.
The Everton winger was one of the eight players that benefited from the decision of interim manager Augustine Eguavoen to give minutes to the so-called fringe players in the squad.
Having logged 46 minutes combined in the first two group matches against Egypt and Sudan, the Hale End Academy product put in a full shift against the African Wild Dog.
"Me personally I am very excited to get a start in the team but the main concern is that we were able to get nine points out of nine, we did very well," Iwobi told reporters post-match.
"But we are not going to rest, we have a long way to go if we want to achieve what we want to achieve but we are very happy."
Despite several changes made to the starting lineup, the Super Eagles' performance did not drop and would have scored more than two goals if they converted their chances.
Iwobi has revealed that the fringe players have shown that they are fully deserving of a place in the starting lineup and Eguavoen faces a welcome selection headache ahead of the round of sixteen clash.
The former England U16 international added : "I am excited to be part of a country that has so many talented players.
"The only problem is that the coach may have a headache because he doesn't know who to choose but it's a good headache to have.
"Whether you are starting or you are going to come on everyone gives one hundred percent and we have the quality to do so."
