'It hasn't worked out' - Werder Bremen chief admits Boniface transfer gamble didn't pay off

Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz has admitted the club's decision to sign Victor Boniface on loan during the summer transfer window has not worked out as expected.

Boniface joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen with hopes of strengthening the club's attacking options for the season.

However, the Nigerian forward struggled to rediscover the form that previously made him one of the most exciting attacking prospects in the Bundesliga, with injuries and inconsistent performances limiting his impact.

The 25-year-old's difficulties have drawn criticism over the club's decision to bring him in, a situation Fritz acknowledged while explaining the reasoning behind the move.

Speaking to German outlet Mopo, Fritz said the club were prepared to take a calculated risk in signing the Nigerian international.

"To take a manageable financial risk and to have the courage to see the opportunity," Fritz explained when asked about the rationale behind the transfer.

He further revealed that the plan behind the deal was not only to benefit from Boniface's quality but also to aid the development of young forward Keke Topp.

"On the one hand, we wanted to develop Keke, and on the other hand, we also wanted to acquire the quality that Victor undoubtedly possesses," he added.

Despite the intentions behind the move, Fritz conceded that the transfer has ultimately failed to deliver the expected outcome.

"As things stand now, we have to say that it hasn't worked out in that form," he said.

Boniface endured a difficult spell at the Weserstadion, recording just two assists in 11 Bundesliga appearances during his loan stint.

His struggles were compounded by injuries that further disrupted his rhythm and limited his ability to make a sustained impact.

The Nigerian forward is currently recovering from a knee injury, casting doubt over his involvement for Werder Bremen for the remainder of the campaign.
