Atalanta central defender Honest Ahanor has expressed his pride and excitement after receiving a call-up to represent Italy U21 squad, despite being eligible to play for the Nigeria's Super Eagles.
Ahanor has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign since joining from Genoa last summer, emerging as one of the standout young performers in Serie A.
The 18-year-old has featured in 28 matches across all competitions, contributing one goal while impressing with his composure and defensive maturity.
His consistent performances at club level have now been rewarded with a maiden invitation to the Italy U21 squad ahead of upcoming international friendlies against North Macedonia and Sweden.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Ahanor described the opportunity to represent Italy as deeply emotional.
"Wearing such an important jersey as Italy's is indescribable, regardless of how many times you've worn it or the opportunities you've had in the past," he was quoted as saying the official website of the Italian Football Federation.
"Being able to represent your country, the place you live in and that's in your blood, is a powerful feeling that makes all the sacrifices worthwhile."
The young defender also stressed the importance of maintaining focus and discipline ahead of the fixtures, warning his teammates against underestimating any opposition.
"We can't underestimate any opponent, regardless of whether we're facing a 'top' team or a team considered 'small.' Ahanor added.
“We're talking about European qualification, every point matters, and we need to take to the field with the right mentality: this is the concept the coach is emphasizing most."
He further highlighted the calm atmosphere within the squad, noting that collective unity remains a key strength.
“We don't feel any negative pressure. We're talking about sport, we need to approach the match with relative ease and a carefree attitude. Having a group that exudes this calmness makes me understand how crucial collective strength is."
Asked about the possibility of a call-up from Gattuso, Ahanor concluded by saying: "Regardless of whether it's the senior national team or an under-17 team, Italy is always Italy. Obviously, that could be an additional source of satisfaction, but my focus is only on these two matches and on thinking about doing well here."
Ahanor is now in line to make his debut for Italy’s U21 side, nicknamed the Little Blues, when they take to the pitch on Thursday.
Despite his current involvement with Italy at youth level, the defender remains eligible to switch allegiance to Nigeria, as FIFA regulations permit a change of national team before a player features in a competitive senior match.
