'It's a slap in the face' - Akor Adams clearly disappointed after Sevilla's defeat to Real Betis

Super Eagles striker Akor Adams did not hide his frustration after Sevilla were defeated 2-0 by city rivals Real Betis in La Liga on Sunday, admitting the loss felt like a 'slap in the face' for both the squad and supporters.

After  an even first half, Marcao’s injury disrupted the defence, and Mendy’s costly loss of possession allowed Pablo Fornals to open the scoring in the 54th minute.

Despite Sevilla coach Almeyda introducing Isaac Romero and Alexis Sanchez to regain control, Betis doubled their lead through Sergi Altimira.

Late efforts from Adams were denied by goalkeeper Valles and a defender’s block, leaving the home side without reward.

Reflecting on the performance, Adams told Sevilla's official website: "We can't lose like this. It's not just a defeat, it's a slap in the face at home.

"For much of the game we were in control, we had chances, but they took theirs and there are no excuses. We have to work hard and keep going."

Adams acknowledged the psychological weight of the loss, both within the dressing room and among the fanbase.

“It's tough for us and for all Sevilla fans. Now we have the Cup midweek and then Valencia.

"We have to look ahead. We’ll be down today and tomorrow, but we have to pick ourselves up.”

Adams has not found the net for Sevilla since October 5 when he scored in the emphatic victory over Barcelona, and his drought has now stretched to seven matches in all competitions after failing to register his name on the scoresheet against Real Betis.
