'It's emotional' - Atletico Madrid forward Lookman says UCL clash with Arsenal is very special

Ademola Lookman has described Atlético Madrid’s upcoming showdown with Arsenal as an emotional encounter, as both sides prepare for a decisive UEFA Champions League semi-final clash at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Lookman, who arrived during the winter transfer window, has quickly become an influential figure for the Spanish side.

The Nigeria international has impressed in Europe this season, registering two goals and two assists in six appearances, including a vital strike in the quarter-final second leg against FC Barcelona.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Lookman acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge posed by Arsenal, describing the Premier League side as one of the toughest opponents remaining in the competition.

“They are a very tough opponent, a top team, we have to be ready to fight," Lookman was quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo.

"It's the Champions League semi-finals, there are no easy opponents at this stage. It will be a very tough match.”

Beyond the sporting stakes, the fixture carries personal significance for the 28-year-old, who grew up in London and began his career at Charlton Athletic.

Lookman admitted the occasion brings back memories of his early football journey, but insisted his primary focus remains on helping Atlético Madrid secure victory and progress to the final.

“For me it’s emotional. I grew up in London. The first time was with Charlton, when I was a kid. Being from London, it’s a very special match. What I want is to win," he added.

Lookman’s availability comes as a major boost for manager Diego Simeone, with the forward having recently recovered from an injury sustained during Atlético’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Real Sociedad.

His return strengthens the team’s attacking options as Simeone aims to guide the club to Champions League glory and avoid ending the season without silverware.
