Raphael Onyedika's absence from the starting lineup for Club Brugge in their clash against KAA Gent on Sunday has sparked discussion, with reports suggesting a combination of form, fitness, and off-field factors behind the decision.
The Super Eagles midfielder was omitted from the starting lineup, with Norway international Hugo Vetlesen preferred ahead of the FC Ebedei product.
According to Belgian outlet Het Nieuwsblad, via Voetbal Belgie, there are growing whispers that Onyedika may no longer be fully focused, a claim that has raised eyebrows given his importance to the team.
Onyedika was unable to secure a move in the summer and winter transfer windows, either due to Club Brugge’s high valuation or a reluctance from the club to negotiate.
Despite having a contract until June 2027, the 25-year-old is reportedly keen on a transfer and has declined an interim contract extension.
On the pitch, his recent performances have fallen below his usual standards as he has struggled to impose himself since the opening play-off match against Anderlecht.
He delivered a below-par display against Sint-Truiden and was substituted in the 69h minute during the encounter with Union Saint-Gilloise due to an ankle issue.
Although he was fit enough to be named in the starting lineup, Onyedika was introduced only as a substitute against KAA Gent, playing the last seventeen minutes of a 2-0 away win.
