Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has set his sights on a crucial victory over Mozambique, insisting Nigeria must make a strong statement as the Africa Cup of Nations enters the knockout stage.
Nigeria will take on Mozambique in the Round of 16 on Monday, January 5, following the conclusion of the group-stage matches last week.
With the competition intensifying, Chukwueze believes a convincing performance is necessary to underline the Super Eagles’ ambition.
Speaking to journalists during the team’s training session, the winger warned his teammates against underestimating their opponents, stressing the need for focus and respect.
“I just have to give them the respect. They are Mozambique, an African team, we have to take them seriously,” Chukwueze said.
Chukwueze added that beyond qualification, the match offers Nigeria an opportunity to send a clear warning to rival nations still in the tournament.
“We have to make sure we beat them, we just need to send a message to other countries,” he revealed.
The winger also reflected on a missed free-kick during Nigeria’s recent victory over Uganda, where he fired over the crossbar from the edge of the box.
Chukwueze admitted the effort fell short and took the banter from teammate Calvin Bassey in good spirit.
“That free kick is nothing to write home about. It is bad. Calvin let him cook me,” he said jokingly.
A win against Mozambique would see Nigeria progress to the quarter-finals and keep their hopes alive of lifting the AFCON trophy for a fourth time.
