Nigerian internationals Ademola Lookman and Raphael Onyedika were central to a thrilling 3-3 UEFA Champions League play-off first leg between Club Brugge and Atlético Madrid on Wednesday night.
Atlético Madrid took the lead in the eighth minute when Julian Alvarez converted a penalty following a VAR review.
The Spanish side doubled their advantage just before half-time, as Lookman capitalised on an Antoine Griezmann flicked corner to score his first UEFA Champions League goal for Atlético Madrid since joining from Atalanta.
The second half saw Club Brugge fight back, with Onyedika leading the charge.
The Nigerian midfielder scored in the 52nd minute, pouncing on a rebound from a Nicolo Tresoldi shot to reduce the deficit.
Eight minutes later, Tresoldi netted again to make it 2-2, keeping the hosts in the contest.
Atlético regained a 3-2 lead in the 79th minute due to an unfortunate own goal from defender Joel Ordonez.
However, Onyedika continued to influence the game, providing the assist for Christos Tzolis’ stoppage-time strike, which was confirmed by VAR to secure a dramatic 3-3 draw.
Lookman impressed with his composure and decisive finishing, marking his first Champions League goal for Atlético Madrid.
Onyedika showcased his all-round ability, scoring and assisting at crucial moments to ensure Club Brugge remained in the tie.
The result leaves the play-off finely poised ahead of the second leg.
