Lookman scores first La Liga goal, equals Luis Suarez record for Atletico Madrid

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman continued his fine start to life at Atlético Madrid, scoring his first La Liga goal in a 4-2 victory over RCD Espanyol on Saturday night.

Lookman struck Atletico’s third goal in the second half after Alexander Sørloth and Giuliano Simeone had earlier put the hosts in control.

However, the Norwegian forward added the fourth goal with 18 minutes remaining, sealing the victory and putting the result beyond Espanyol.

The Nigerian forward powered home a header at the back post from a corner after a flick-on at the near side, registering his first league goal for the Rojiblancos and extending his scoring run across all competitions.

Since joining the Spanish side from Atalanta BC in January, Lookman has now recorded four goals and two assists in six appearances.

His impressive start has seen him match the scoring benchmark set by Luis Suárez, who also netted four times in his first six matches for Atletico during the 2020/21 season, according to Opta

The 28-year-old will be encouraged by his bright start to life in Spain after a difficult beginning to the season at Atalanta BC, where a proposed summer move to Inter Milan failed to materialise.

Lookman will now aim to sustain his impressive form as Atlético Madrid seek a positive result against Club Brugge KV and secure qualification for the Round of 16.
