Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Jennifer Echegini has claimed that she never considered representing 2017 European champions the Netherlands at international level.
The former Millwall, Arsenal and Charlton Athletic youth teamer is now cap-tied to Nigeria and famously scored the winning goal as the Super Falcons came from behind to beat Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
Born in Nijmegen, Netherlands twenty four years ago, Echegini moved to England at the age of 11 with her Nigerian parents, before eventually relocating to the United States, where she played college football for the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Florida State Seminoles.
She made her Super Falcons debut in 2022 under Randy Waldrum, the American who coached Nigeria at the 2023 World Cup in Australia.
Echegini has pledged her loyalty to Nigeria, insisting that representing the Netherlands was never an option.
Speaking about her ambitions with the national team, Echegini told Onyonyo Mbaise: "We won the Afcon as you know. Obviously we want to win the next Afcon, and then 2027 we have the World Cup.
"So we want to be one of the big teams heading into the World Cup and winning".
When asked if she would have chosen the Netherlands had the opportunity arisen, Echegini's answer was brief but emphatic: "No".
Echegini and her Super Falcons teammates will have to wait until July 2026 to defend their Wafcon crown after the Confederation of African Football confirmed on Thursday that the tournament in Morocco has been postponed.
