Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri has addressed the challenges facing Nigeria midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru ahead of the Serie A showdown with Juventus at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.
Dele-Bashiru enjoyed a strong start to the season but saw his momentum halted by an injury sustained in September.
Since returning to fitness in November, the 25-year-old has struggled to force his way back into Sarri’s starting XI, failing to start a league game before leaving to represent Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite contributing to the Super Eagles’ bronze-medal finish at the AFCON, the former Manchester City midfielder has struggled to re-establish himself as a regular in Lazio’s squad since returning from the tournament.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Sarri admitted the midfielder is still not at his best, noting that the combination of injury and AFCON absence has allowed Toma Bašić to move ahead of him in the pecking order.
'Dele-Bashiru isn't feeling well, but it's clear that between the Africa Cup of Nations and his injury, Basic has advanced," he said as reported by Radioset.
The Super Eagles midfielder has featured in 10 league matches this season, accumulating just 314 minutes of playing time.
His difficulties at the Stadio Olimpico have fueled uncertainty over his future, with reports linking him to a potential January move to Bournemouth.
