Official: Ajax Amsterdam confirm Akpom has joined Ipswich Town on a permanent deal

Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed the permanent departure of Nigeria-eligible striker Chuba Akpom to Ipswich Town, with the move coming at a defining moment in the English club’s resurgence.

Ipswich are heading back to the Premier League after sealing automatic promotion, completing a remarkable rise that has reignited belief around Portman Road.

Their return to the top flight, secured with an emphatic final-day victory, has not only restored the club’s status among England’s elite but also triggered key decisions behind the scenes, including Akpom’s permanent signing.

Ajax confirmed the transfer in an official statement: “Ajax and Ipswich Town FC have reached an agreement on the transfer of Chuba Akpom. The striker joined the English club on loan from Ajax last season, with an option to buy included in the agreement. This option has now been exercised, making Akpom’s move permanent. The 30 year old forward was under contract with Ajax until June 30, 2028.”

Akpom’s journey to this point has been one of persistence and reinvention. After arriving in Amsterdam with a strong scoring reputation from his time in England, he struggled to fully establish himself at Ajax, prompting the loan switch that ultimately shaped his next move.

At Ipswich, however, he became part of a squad driven by momentum, discipline, and a clear identity under manager Kieran McKenna.

The timing of the deal speaks volumes about Ipswich’s intent. Promotion to the Premier League doesn’t just bring prestige, it brings sharper scrutiny, bigger financial stakes, and the relentless test of going toe-to-toe with elite opposition every week.

Bringing in a proven forward like Akpom is more than squad building; it’s a clear statement that Ipswich are not content with survival, but are aiming to belong, compete, and disrupt at the highest level.
