'Practiced it in training' - Akor Adams explains composed penalty against Atletico Madrid

Sevilla forward Akor Adams has reflected on his composed penalty and the team’s collective performance following their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid on Saturday at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, a result that boosted their LaLiga survival hopes.

Adams opened the scoring for Sevilla from the penalty spot inside the opening stages after Dani Martínez was penalised following a VAR review for a challenge on Isaac Romero.

Despite Atlético goalkeeper Juan Musso getting a strong hand to the strike, the Nigerian forward kept his composure to convert, setting the tone for what proved to be a crucial home win.

Speaking to the club’s official website after the match, Adams highlighted the unity and energy within the squad as key factors behind the result, praising both teammates and supporters for their influence on the performance.

He said the atmosphere created around the club played a decisive role in lifting the players on the pitch, explaining that "all the energy of the club, the fans, and the players transformed into a positive atmosphere for this match. We gave 100% and achieved our objective, which was the three points."

The Super Eagles forward also reserved special praise for the supporters, who he believes provided the extra push needed in a tightly contested encounter. He added that the backing from the stands was crucial throughout the game, saying

"The fans' support was incredible; it gave us a great energy. We play for them, and if we're all like this, we'll be happy every week."

Beyond the penalty itself, Adams also spoke about his preparation and mentality in the moment, revealing that repeated work on the training ground helped him maintain calm under pressure.

He explained his approach to the decisive spot-kick, stating: "Practiced it in training" and further added that he felt confident stepping up due to the backing of his teammates, noting that he had " the confidence of all my teammates."

Sevilla’s victory, their first after three consecutive league defeats, was also built on a strong collective display across the pitch.

Adams was quick to acknowledge the contributions of his teammates in securing the result, highlighting midfield control and defensive organisation as key components of the performance.

He said "Everyone played a good game: Manu and Agoumé in midfield, Castrín at the back, and everyone else. We all achieved our goal."

The win lifts Sevilla out of the relegation zone and into 15th place, providing a timely boost under Luis García Plaza.
