Benin Rep Wins Ogun Unity Cup
Published: June 17, 2014A team from Republic of Benin has emerged winner of Under-16 category of International Soccer Tournament tagged ‘Ogun Unity Cup’ while the host, Ogun State won the Under-13 class of the tourney after defeated Anambra 2-0 at the finals played inside the mainbowl of Dipo Dina International Stadium Ijebu-Ode on Sunday evening.
The Benin Republic boys that entered the final without losing a match overwhelmed Edo State who carried Nigerian flag at the final by 2 goals to nil and became the first champion of the tourney organized by A square Sports International in collaboration with Ogun State Football Association.
Meanwhile more than hundred players distinguished themselves out of about 900 that participated in the event were offered instant admission into the Ibadan based soccer school that sponsored the tourney, Frenage International Soccer Academy.
The development according to the CEO of Frenage, Prince Oluwole Ololade is for them to continue their soccer career under the tutelage of former Celtic FC and Chelsea FC of England youth Coach Fennesey Harty Thomas who is also the technical director of the soccer school.
All participants that took part a week long soccer fiesta were full of appreciation to the organizers and sponsor for giving them such rare opportunity where the boys played under good pitches and coaches were taught by FIFA/CAF instructor, Prof Babatunde Olu Asagba in a seminar organized during the event.
Also former Secretary General of Nigeria Football Association, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi who kicked-off the tourney reiterated his commitment to grassroots football development, saying “grassroots football development, which suppose to be the priority of every stakeholder of the game is suffering serious neglect, and that is why I always support and encourage anyone that invested their hard earn resources in developing the grassroots”.
