Super Eagles Get Their Afcon Qualifying Campaign Back On Track
Published: November 15, 2014
Defending champions Nigeria got their African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign back on track following the 2 - 0 win over Congo in Pointe - Noire on Saturday afternoon.
Off the pitch, the major talking point before the game was the reinstatement of Stephen Keshi by the powers that be, but the former New Nigeria Bank libero is back in the good books of the fans after grinding out win against the Red Devils.
After a cagey first half which produced no goals, Nigeria eventually took the lead in the 59th minute through Villarreal striker Ikechukwu Uche, who made no mistake from the penalty spot after the referee had blown for a foul on Emmanuel Emenike.
And the match official pointed to the spot for the second time in five minutes, this time in favour of Congo, following a hand ball in the 18 - yard box by Godfrey Oboabona, but Enyeama came to the Super Eagles rescue by saving the spot kick from Thievy Bifouma.
Guangzhou R&F striker Aaron Samuel, a second half substitute, netted for the second straight game in Nigeria colours to give the African champions a two - goal cushion.
The only cause for alarm after that goal was when the game was held up for few minutes after angry Congolese fans threw objects on the pitch.
Nigeria, who failed to win any of their opening three games, will qualify for the tournament in Equatorial Guinea if they win their next game against South Africa.
