Amobi Okugo, Maurice Edu Named Best-ever Draft Picks In MLS History
Published: January 08, 2017The official website of Major League Soccer has compiled a club-by-club listing of the best-ever draft picks in MLS history, with two players of Nigerian descent Amobi Okugo and Maurice Edu included.
Versatile former USA U23 international Okugo was named the best draft pick in the history of Philadelphia Union, while ex-MLS Rookie of the Year Edu was the draft pick of all-time by Toronto FC.
On Okugo, MLSsoccer.com wrote : “The Union have a very hit-or-miss history in their six years when it comes to the SuperDraft, but one hit was definitely Okugo.
“In five seasons with the Union, Okugo made 117 appearances at the defensive midfield and center back positions.”
On Edu’s impact at Toronto FC : “TFC fans have seen plenty of disappointing draft picks over the past decade, but one bright spot was their first MLS selection in Edu.
“He was named Rookie of the Year in 2007 before Toronto collected a hefty transfer fee for the California native in the middle of 2008. ”
In 2016, Okugo was on the books of Portland Timbers and Edu represented Philadelphia Union.
