U20 World Cup Squad Numbers : Bournemouth's Ofoborh Handed No. 13 Jersey Worn By Nigeria Greats Siasia, Igbinoba, Ikedia
Published: May 16, 2019
The Nigeria Football Federation have assigned squad numbers to the 21 players named to the country's squad list for the 2019 U20 World Cup which begins next week in Poland, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Curiously the number ten jersey usually reserved for the star player in the team was allocated to the unheralded Akwa United midfielder Aniekeme Okon, which means Manchester City whizkid Tom Dele-Bashiru gets another squad number, 8.
If the jersey numbers are anything to go by, manager Paul Aigbogun has not given a hint of his starting lineup, with first-choice goalkeeper Olawale Oremade, Rosenborg's Igho Ogbu and Bologna's Kingsley Michael not allocated 1-11 squad numbers.
Bournemouth midfielder Nnamdi Ofoborh has been allocated the number 13 jersey and there is a history behind that shirt.
The number 13 was worn by Nigeria legend Samson Siasia at the 1985 World Youth Championship and Victor Igbinoba, who scored that famous goal against Germany in the final of the U16 World Championship, wore it during the 1987 WYC, while ex-Ajax Amsterdam star Pius Ikedia was allocated the shirt number in 1999.
