Four Things We Learned From Super Falcons' 3-0 Defeat At The Hands Of Norway
Published: June 09, 2019
Nigeria will reignite their hopes of making it out of the group stages of this competition for the first time since 1999 when they battle South Korea in their second group game of the World Cup on June 12.
But what went wrong in Reims on Saturday?
Allnigeriasoccer.com reveals the four things noticed from the humbling defeat:
1) Nigeria's defending left a lot more to be desired: The Super Falcons showed a litany of nondescript defending approaches which clearly played into the hands of Norway.
The duo of Osinachi Ohale and Ngozi Ebere were outran by their opponents and seemed at loss how to curtail the advances made at their goal. We only hope these issues will be ironed out just before they take to the pitch for their next game.
2) Poor team chemistry was glaring: The team's play was less cohesive and they looked hasty in their build-ups. A little more patience in their exchanges and passes might have done a lot of good.
The ladies must equally work on their decision-making particularly when they come up against strong teams like they faced tonight.
3) Dennerby's tactical mishap costs the team dear: The Swede ought to have set up his team in a way they will be able to contain Norway, one of the favourites for the competition, but he failed woefully there.
Starting five attack-minded players versus a team they were originally meant to be conservative against was a naive move.
4) Asisat Oshoala playing through the middle leaves the team shorn of her needed creativity: Deploying Barcelona's Oshoala down the attack as a central striker noticeably robs the team of the menace she can be when going up against opposing defenders through the flanks.
Dennerby, and of course the team will be better served if she attacks through the left wing and tries to cut in or find her fellow attackers with some piece of her magic. Hopefully, we will get to see such of this tactics in the remaining games.
