Kenneth Omeruo: The Perfect Backup To Ageing Chelsea Star David Luiz
Published: July 05, 2019David Luiz is definitely one of the best defenders the Blues have had in recent years and he showed his importance to the team throughout last season.
The 32-year-old was one of the standout players in the League despite Chelsea's not-too-impressive display all through the campaign.
Luiz was the best Chelsea defender during the 2018-19 season as he achieved some amazing feats, including helping the Blues to their second Europa League triumph after thrashing the Gunners 4-1 in the final.
The Blues were impressed by the Brazilian's show of quality and experience, so much so that they extended his stay at Stamford Bridge by offering a two-year deal which he gladly accepted in May.
However, the fact remains that the former PSG centre-back is not getting any younger and there is a need for Frank Lampard to start preparing for life without the Brazilian.
One of the best ways to prepare for his absence is simply by integrating Nigeria defender Kenneth Omeruo into the team this season.
Just like David Luiz, the 25-year-old centre-back had an eventful and awesome time with La Liga side CD Leganes and he was arguably the best Chelsea loanee last season.
The safety-first defender, who loves to clear the ball from his 18-yard box, was a regular in coach Mauricio Pellegrino's starting lineup and he repaid the manager's trust with great, no-nonsense and very coordinated performances at the back of the pitch.
Omeruo is an experienced member of the Blues, as he has been with the club since 2012, and he knows how things are being done at Stamford Bridge.
Omeruo can equally be seen as an upgrade to Luiz based on his versatility and ability to feature as a right-back.
Relatively young and reliable, Omeruo is definitely the best player to serve as backup to the Brazilian at Stamford Bridge and it won't be a massive surprise should Lampard decide to hold onto his services in the upcoming season.
