'I have seen' - Valencia coach backs Sadiq to get back to his best and score goals
Published: January 15, 2025
Speaking at the post-match press conference after Valencia's 2-0 win over Ourense CF in the Copa del Rey, manager Carlos Corberán has expressed confidence in Umar Sadiq's ability to regain his best form.
The Nigeria international logged 130 minutes spread across three games before netting his first goal in Valencia colours, following his loan move from Real Sociedad earlier this month.
Against Ourense CF, Sadiq was a constant threat in attack, and his persistence paid off late in the game.
With just twelve minutes remaining, he weaved past multiple defenders with a clever move and fired home to double Valencia's advantage.
Sadiq failed to impress at Real Sociedad, with the Super Eagles striker struggling to replicate the form that made him a standout at Almería, where he scored 43 goals in 84 games.
Injuries hampered his progress at Real Sociedad, affecting both his consistency and match fitness.
In search of playing opportunities, the former AS Roma starlet joined Valencia on loan for the remainder of the season, with an option to buy included in the deal.
In quotes relayed by Valencia's official website, Corberán told reporters: "He has shown that he thrives close to goal. He made a solo move, scoring an important goal, and that goal will surely give him the confidence to score many more.
"I'm satisfied with the minutes he played, and they will help him to continue growing as a footballer. The goal, as a forward, gives him a bit of confidence that is important to continue helping in that aspect.
"I have seen a Sadiq with a lot of desire and that will to play, to get back to his best and score goals.
"I also want to increase his desire to contribute to the game at all times."
It remains to be seen whether Sadiq will make his home debut for Valencia on Sunday night when they take on Real Sociedad in La Liga.
